About the Symposium
Sarawak Women X: Global Innovative Entrepreneurship
Women play an important role in the economic growth of a country. Women entrepreneurs in particular, play a vital role in this society by improving the economic status and economic growth through the creation of new products and services. Unleashing the economic power of women is one of the key solutions to achieving growth, dynamism and ingenuity in the global economy.
In Sarawak, raising women as entrepreneurs is a part of a current government initiative. Although women entrepreneurs have become more important players in the entrepreneurial landscape, the number is still small. Thus, an ecosystem that supports the growth of entrepreneurship from start-up to scale up is necessary in a growing economy landscape.
This symposium thus aims to consolidate various existing efforts in Sarawak by sharing best practices from various governmental bodies, non-governmental organisations – to further strengthen the support for women entrepreneurship. In this symposium, successful women from different fields will be sharing their ideas and thoughts with the participating women entrepreneurs on “Creating
innovative Entrepreneurship”; in the 21st century. To make this event more interactive there will be a panel discussion on “Navigating the challenges of being an entrepreneur: our success stories” and a sharing session on “Good Design” from Malaysia Design Council.
Jointly organised by Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, JWKS, SARAWAK Multimedia Authority, and SOCOE, we welcome you to Sarawak Women X: Global Innovative Entrepreneurship 2020. Thank You for your participation. We sincerely hope you enjoy the symposium.
Welcome Message from the Symposium Chair
On behalf of the organizing committee, I am honoured and delighted to welcome you to the inaugural Sarawak Women X: Global Innovative Entrepreneurship 2020 in Kuching, Sarawak, coinciding with the Women’s International day 2020.
Celebrated annually on 8th March, the 2020 International Women’s Day focuses on the theme, ‘An equal world is an enabled world’;. The campaign theme #EachforEqual is drawn from a notion of ‘Collective Individualism’; where we are all parts of a whole. Our individual actions, conversations, behaviours and mindsets can have an impact on our larger society. Collectively, we can make change happen. Collectively, we can each help to create a gender equal world. Gender equality is essential for economies and communities to thrive.
Thus, the symposium theme, Global Innovative Entrepreneurship has been carefully chosen to celebrate the social and economic, achievements of women in Sarawak. We are very privileged to be co‐chairs of this important symposium. Our program is rich and varied with a keynote speech from the Chief Minister of Sarawak and 3 invited talks from industry, government bodies and women entrepreneurs with numerous opportunities for informal networking.
As the Symposium Chair of Sarawak Women X: Global Innovative Entrepreneurship 2020, I know that the success of the symposium depends ultimately on the many people who have worked with us in planning and organizing both the technical program and supporting social arrangements. In particular, we thank the Program committee for organizing the technical program and our sponsors who have helped us to keep down the costs for all participants. Recognition should go to the Local Organizing Committee members who have all worked extremely hard on the details of important aspects of the symposium programs and social activities. We would like to thank all of the sponsoring organizations for providing their generous financial support. We would like to humbly acknowledge and thank the co-organisers; JWKS, SOCOE and SMA for the unwavering support. Lastly, we would like to thank all of the symposium participants for their contributions which are the foundation of this symposium.
